By clicking the tab ‘Frequency surveying estimates,’ the result page presents frequencies calculated by a Bayesian extrapolation method. Though very simple and easily defensible, this approach known as the counting method has limitations due to the reduced size of the database and sampling effects especially in poorly sampled populations. A query returns a printable document which includes the absolute number of matches in the tab-selected database type (MPs, continents, haplogroups) and the relative frequency value including the confidence interval limits calculated according to the exact Clopper–Pearson method. Currently, Y-STR profiles can be searched within 7 continental sets, 34 hierarchically arranged metapopulations, 108 countries, and 118 haplogroups (release 37 from June 21, 2011, see Figures 5 and 6 ). The database has a structure that can be adapted to the needs of the user allowing searches in the whole database or in subsets defined by the metapopulation, the nationality, or the haplogroup of the sampled chromosomes. Irregularly spaced STR alleles are named according to the ISFG recommendations. To facilitate the search, the scroll-down menu shows all alleles that have been observed in the database at the respective locus. At each position of the search mask, the respective allele must be entered.
